Xubuntu 18.04 VMware image with Tools
Ubuntu's Bionic Beaver has just arrived and so did the Ubuntu flavor Xubuntu with long-term support. Our Xubuntu VMware image comes with preinstalled VMware tools as a relatively light download. Xubuntu is the Ubuntu that is most configurable. It is also much faster than the main release, which is important for virtualization. Xubuntu is a real alternative to the main Ubuntu image -- see below.
The Xfce desktop is known for its configurability and swiftness. It is almost as light with using resources like memory as the Lubuntu image. Certainly it outrivals that slow memory hog that works inside our main Ubuntu image. Xubuntu is somewhat in the middle of both and its strength is a desktop that can be much better configured than the main Ubuntu release that uses the new Gnome desktop. Perhaps it is also more stable and bug-free than the main release, which just got switched from the Unity desktop back to Gnome.
Xfce was always there and is there to stay as it is gets developed continuously and stoically, withstanding all modern forces of creating new (and strange, aka unusable) metaphors for using a computer. In the end this new Xfce VMware image is the most ergonomic and efficient Ubuntu image we have.
Applications: Firefox, Transmission, Synaptic, compiler chain, and many tools.
