Lubuntu 12.04 LTS VMware image
Fortunately for all those Ubuntu lovers who didn't fall in love with the new Gnome shell or Ubuntu Unity there is Lubuntu. The L of Lubuntu stands for lightweight and its name could also be Subuntu, as in speedy Ubuntu.

Anyway, here it is, and it has inherited from its parent Ubuntu 12.04 the long-term support of five years. Combined with the accustomed desktop look and feel of Gnome 2 Lubuntu 12.04 LTS simply rocks. Download your lightening fast version of the Precise Pangolin just above.
This image has also a successor without any applications. Only system tools are installed. You can use the basic Lubuntu 12.04 image with VMware Tools as a base for your own VMware apps.
Another alternative with a desktop like Gnome 2.x would be the fine Mint distro. We have here the Linux Mint 12 version that comes also with the LXDE desktop. Mint is heavyweight while Lubuntu is lightweight. It has more codecs, addons, plugins and other special software like Java directly on board. But because it is also based on LXDE it is a swift heavyweight champion.
