Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat VMware image
Ubuntu currently seems to be the most prominent Linux distribution. Maverick Meerkat will probably be the last Ubuntu version that uses the Gnome 2.x desktop environment. So, if Gnome 3 or the Ubuntu desktop Unity is not for you, this may be the one.
The Maverick Meerkat appliance comes without VMware Tools, but we also have an Ubuntu 10.10 image with the Tools. This one has the advantage that the many security and other updates and upgrades of Ubuntu are not going to continuously screw up the VMware Tools. Ubuntu's tendency to develop a system further after its release collides with the VMware Tools and their static dependency on various system parts.
If you like to update frequently, you are probably better off with the Debian 6 appliance that already includes VMware Tools. Debian only lets security updates in after the release.
Applications: Firefox, Evolution, OpenOffice, Transmission, Shotwell, Brasero, Pitivi, Rhythmbox, Gwibber, Empathy and some other audio, CD, video and system tools.
