Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat VMware image with Tools

This is the latest and probably last edition of Ubuntu with the Gnome 2 desktop. From here on Ubuntu plans to switch to Unity and Gnome tries the adventurous path with the new Gnome Shell, Zeitgeist and so on.

Appliance Ubuntu 10.10
VM image size 609 MB
Disk 40 GB
VMware Tools yes
User/password user/password
Root password password
Successor is
Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

The Ubuntu 10.10 appliance has VMware Tools already installed. Everything has been tested and confirmed to work. Together with the Debian 6 appliance is this the first choice for a VMware image with the accustomed Gnome 2 desktop and working VMware Tools.

Ubuntu likes to upgrade and tweak its releases, while Debian is a bit more conservative and prefers security updates only. This means that the VMware Tools of the Debian appliance will more likely still be working in their entity after updating the whole system than the VM Tools of the Ubuntu image. On the other hand, updating the system is in many cases for a virtual appliance not really necessary, because it has the intrinsic sandbox security. Often it is more valuable to have the completely working VMware Tools including disk shrinking and shared folders.

Compared with the pure Ubuntu 10.10 image this one has no OpenOffice in order to make a smaller download but VMware Tools.

Applications: Firefox, Evolution, Transmission, Shotwell, Brasero, Pitivi, Rhythmbox, Gwibber, Empathy and some other audio, CD, video and system tools.
